Hello,
I will be visting Japan with my husband in October for a total of 3 weeks. We plan to explore the Kansai region, Hiroshima, and will end our trip in Tokyo. Can you help advise which pass would be the most economical for us to purchase? Here is a detailed itinerary:
Osaka 10/9 - 10/12
Hiroshima 10/12 - 10/15
Naoshima Art Island 10/15 -10/17
Osaka 10/17 - 10/20
Kyoto 10/20 - 10/23
Tokyo 10/23 - 10/30

We are interested in doing daytrips to Nara, Kobe, and some nearby onsens when in Osaka/Kobe. Also day trip to Yokohama from Tokyo and perhaps some day hikes near the Tokyo area.

Any insight and advice would be much much appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Hi there,

I reviewed your travel plans and tried to match different options. Economically, the most cost efficient option would be to:

1.) Use a 7-day Sanyo-San'in Area Pass for travel to Hiroshima, Naoshima, Kobe, Kyoto and any other travel you may want to do in that area.

2.) Then buy a one way rail ticket Kyoto - Tokyo. This can be done at any JR station.

Check our blog for some great hiking suggestions, like Nokogiri-yama and Takao-san, NIkko is also an amazing stop to visit.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you for your reply!
So if I purchase the 7day Sanyo San-in Area Pass will I need to purchase two since it is only valid for 7 consecutive days?
Also, Should I purchase the one way ticket from Kyoto to Tokyo in advance?

Many thanks for your help!
Kind regards,
Jackie

Hi Jackie,

Yes, so I'd recommend the 7day Sanyo San-in Area Pass for 10/12 - 10/18 and then use a one way ticket to Tokyo.

The ticket can be purchased on the day of travel at the station (but also earlier). I recommend getting the 7day Sanyo San-in Area Pass in advance, as it will help you save money.

You could also get a Travel card for any travel outside of the JR Pass.

Hope this helps :)
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
It's been a minute. How are you? I need your advice in explaining what the difference between a travelcard and an amazing pass is? Will it benefit to purchase both, in addition to having the 7day Sanyo San-in Area Pass? Just when I thought I had my travel covered it has thrown me for another loop!

Thanking you in advance for your help!

Kind regards,
Jackie

Hi Jackie,

A travel card is just an electronic way of payment for your transport, it is very convenient bus does not provide discounts on its own.

The Osaka Amazing pass, is a discount pass that offers free admission to different sightseeing spots in Osaka and also includes travel on the metro. It is a good deal if you actually visit the sightseeing spots included in the Osaka amazing pass.

Kind regards,
Daniel
