Hi, your assistance would be greatly appreciated! I will be travelling 25 September to 2 October inclusive so 8 days in total
My itinerary seems to be using mostly 'Hikari' bullet trains which I note do not have a Green Carriage. I have 2 questions: Firstly, does a first class JR Pass still make sense? Perhaps for non-Shinkansen trains, or perhaps just for the 1hr 30 mins each way to Hiroshima on a 'Sakura' Shinkansen (which does have a Green Carriage)? Secondly, should I buy a 7 or 14 day pass? My 8th day only involves a short 15 minute journey from Shinimamiya to Osaka so do I buy a single ticket for day 8 plus a 7 day pass or a 14 day pass? Thank you!

Hi there,

Where did you get that information? As I can tell you that Hikari trains do have Green Cards, some have up to 3 carriages that are only for Green Class users. The Sakura also has Green Cars but generally only half a train car, so it makes sense to book your tickets for that train 1 day or so in advance.

I think a 7 day JR Pass would make the most sense if you can include all your long distance travel with it.

Shin-Imamiya to Osaka is indeed a small trip and buying a normal ticket will only cost around 200yen.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

I see why this could be confusing. The Hikari Rail Star is an old train service that was different from the normal Hikari.

It is an old blog post, will update it to avoid any confusion. Thank you for letting me know.
