Should we purchase a JR pass or rather regional passes?

Hi!
we will be travelling to Japan in July 2026 with the following itinerary. Could you please let us know if it is better to purchase a 21 days JR pass or rather several regional passes? Thanks a lot!

  • arrival Tokyo Haneda
  • 5 nights in Tokyo -
  • travel Tokyo to Enzan JR station - 2 nights in Yamanishi
  • travel Enzan JR station to Kamakura - 2 nights in Kamakura
  • travel Kamakura to Kyoto - 6 nights in Kyoto
  • while in Kyoto, day trips to Nara * Himeji and maybe Osaka
  • travel Kyoto - Hiroshima
  • while in Hiroshima, day trip to Miyajima
  • travel Hiroshima back to Tokyo

Could you please also let me know how I can find the best train connection between 2 cities and if I can/should book the train prior to arrival?

Hi Nathalie,

I reviewed your itinerary and potentially you could make good use of a 7-day Japan Rail Pass here. Given that you would cover the return Tokyo - Kyoto with it, plus the day trip to Hiroshima. This is good to about break even with the pass, and any additional travel is basically free :)

The stations you plan visit visit all have very regular service (think multiple trains per hours, if not ever few minutes). So there's no real need to book days ahead of time here, maybe do so 1-2 days ahead so at the day of travel it is a little more relaxed. For the rest, should be a very nice trip!
