Hi Daniel San

My wife and I will be in Japan Saturday March 31 to Saturday April 14. We plan to stay in Tokyo for a few days to Thursday April 5 when we plan to go to Osaka. We plan to be in Osaka from Thursday April 5 to Wednesday April 11 before we return to Tokyo for the rest of our trip. In Osaka we plan to do day trips to Nara and Kyoto. So will a 7 day JR pass from Thursday April 5 to Wednesday April 11 be a good idea.

I have read that some people have taken domestic flights. We will be staying Kanda station in Tokyo and Namba in Osaka. Round trip prices out of Narita are about 80 USD and Haneda which will be closer 135 USD. But will the cost of local transit and our trips to Nara and Kyoto make it null. Also we would like to save time traveling to and from Tokyo and Osaka. Again flying will be faster but then we have to account for getting to the airport as well as security/check in. so will we really save time after all. Haneda airport should be quicker but will it be faster than using a train?

Is there a discount when you get multiple things like jr pass and pocket WiFi

thank you for your help Binh

Hello Binh,

Making comparison between airline travel and Shinkansen travel is not as straight forward. Ticket prices for airlines change all the time but there are also many unexpected wait times, like going to the airport, waiting there, collecting luggage and so on. While with the bullet train, you get on the train and you get off in the middle of Tokyo. The route Osaka - Tokyo takes around 160 minutes one way. Pricing for the Shinkansen is also always the same, either a normal fare or you use the Japan Rail Pass. Total travel time will also depend on where your accommodation is located.

I do think the JR Pass would be the more flexible option, as you can take the train anytime anywhere without having to think about cost. If you really want to get the best our of your JR Pass, I would suggest adding a day trip either from Tokyo to places like Kamakura, Nikko or Yokohama or to Kobe, Himeji or Hiroshima from Osaka,

We provide lower prices for both WiFi and the JR Pass compared to purchase directly in Japan.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
