Hi there,

Travelling to Japan from April 7 -21. Flying into Osaka and there for 4 days. Down to Koyasan and Nara for a day or 2. Then Kyoto for 4 days and onto Hakone & Mount Fuji for 2. Ending the trip in Tokyo for 4 days. I'm wondering if we should get a 7 day or 14 day JR pass? We can activate the 7 day from 11-17th and perhaps get a daily transport ticket for around tokyo when we get there? Or would it be worth getting a 14 day JR pass for transport around Tokyo?can't decide!
Have tried the JR calculator but it says it wouldn't be worth our budget even getting the 7 day pass- this cant be right for osaka- koyasan- nara- Kyoto- fuji- hakone- Tokyo.
Help Any One?

Hi there,

The Fare calculator is right and I'll explain why. Looking at the route you travel from a birdseye show you do a good amount of travel in the Kansai Area (Osaka, Koya, Nara, Kyoto) and the greater Tokyo area + Fuji. Local travel within areas does not cost a lot while long travel on the Shinkansen is what really adds up.

For instance, a return Tokyo - Kyoto will already pay for the JR Pass however you could do Kyoto - Nara - Osaka - Kobe - Koya-san on local trains and only spend a fraction of that.

Instead, I would just buy an electronic travel card and use that to travel within Kansai / Tokyo, then use a one-way Shinkansen ticket to Tokyo.

You could look at a Hakone Free Pass for travel around Hakone/Fuji.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
