Hi all! We are travelling with my wife and a baby (0 yrs) to Tokyo for the Rugby World Cup. Once there, we would like to do some travelling accross Japan, we are planning to visit especially Kyoto, Nikko and Mt. Fuji. We would love to ask couple of questions:

1) Is JR Pass budget-wise for us with this schedule?

2) We will stay 7 days in Tokyo and we want to travel for 7 days. Is 7-day JR Pass sufficient for us? Or do we need it in Tokyo as well?

3) Is it possible to go to Mt. Fuji area with train? Where should we go by the train to Mt. Fuji?

4) Is it necessary to book the trains in advance, or is it possible to just come and take a train?

5) Are there any obligations concerning the baby (0 years)? I guess it is free of charge, but otherwise (stroller etc.).

Thank you very much,
kind regards from the Czech Republic

Hi there,

1.) It depends on how many days you spend in each city. Going to Nikko and Kyoto can add up to a lot and I suspect a JR Pass will be good. Please tell me how many days you go to each city and I can say for sure.

2.) Local travel within Tokyo does not cost much compared to intercity travel and using a JR Pass for your longer trips is what makes the most sense.

3.) Yes, though the route is not fully covered by the JR Pass. For details see:

4.) Both are possible, during Golden week and other national holidays - it is recommended to book 2-4 days in advance.

5.) Yes, for details see:

Kind regards,
Daniel

Hello Daniel,
thank you for your reply and sorry for being a little late with my reaction, busy in a work and we are heading to Japan in October (for RWC), so there is still some time left.
We will spend 3 days in Nikko, as we already have accomodation booked. We are not sure with the lenght of our Kyoto trip yet, and we also think about the stop in Fuji during the Kyoto trip. Would you recommend to put these two together?
In any case, we want to buy the railpass for 7 days. We want to spend the rest of our holiday in Tokyo area.
One (two) last additional question(s): Can we buy the passes now, or it is possible 3 month in advance only? And how does it work with activation? We want to have it activated after a week in Japan and we do not know the exact day as of now...

Thank you very much! Have a nice day and weekend,

kind regards

Jan
