I believe a 7 day Japan rail pass would be wise but hoped you could confirm it would work and be most economical for the trips I'm taking?
Yokohama to Okazaki Sunday morning
Okazaki to ? (Tokyo or an onsen somewhere between Okazaki and Osaka) Tuesday middle of the day
Shinkansen to Osaka Thurs
Then to Osaka airport on Fri mid-day

Alternative is to stay in Tokyo Thursday and take the shinkansen fast train Friday morning straight to Osaka airport from Tokyo? But that would not allow us to see anything of Osaka

Hi there,

A 7-day JR Pass will be the best option, assuming you will include a visit to Osaka.

I do recommend returning Tokyo at least 1 night before your flight, while delays on the JR Network are rare, they can happen and you don't want to be stuck in Osaka when your flight from Tokyo is the same day.

For Onsen, I recommend a visit to Kinosaki-Onsen or Kurama-Onsen in the north of Tokyo.
