Hello! I need to travel from Tokyo (staying in Shibuya) to Hakuba on Sunday, January 28. I then want to travel from Hakuba to Kyoto on Saturday, February 3. Is it worth buying a 7-day rail pass? What is the best way to travel? What are the train schedules? Thank you so much!

Hi there!

You're probably better off buying your tickets individually, if you're looking to save as much money as possible, as your itinerary is fairly short.

To get to Hakuba, you can get the Hokuriku-Shinkansen to Nagano from Tokyo Station, but you'll have to get a bus from Nagano to Hakuba. Tickets for this can be purchased at the station.

To get to Kyoto from Hakuba, you'll need to get the bus back to Nagano, take the Hokuriku-Shinkansen to Kanazawa, and then from there take the Thunderbird Limited Express to Kyoto.

In terms of train schedules, the ones provided by the JR companies aren't particularly helpful. The most accessible means of planning is probably Google maps, as it'll let you input the time, date, and destination very easily.

Hope this helps! Please don't hesitate to ask any further questions, if you wish.
