Hi,

I am travelling to Japan next month and wanted to check if it is worth my while purchasing a Japan Rail pass. I understand that to travel to Tokyo I have to take the shinkansen to Nagoya and then change to another line not covered by my pass. Is this correct? From Takayama to Shirakawago and onto Kanazawa, the only route is to take the bus? From Kanazawa I can travel again using my JR Pass to return to Tokyo. I am planning a day trip to Hakone once back in Tokyo. I would appreciate your advice on whether I should buy the JR pass and whether my understanding in getting to these places mentioned above are correct. Many thanks.

Hello HL,

The route is fully covered by the JR Pass to Takayama, you can indeed take the Shinkansen to Nagoya and then the Hide Wide view express to Takayama. The bus to and from Shirakawago however is not covered but all rail travel from there is.

A 7 day JR Pass would be worth it for this trip if you can return to Tokyo or at least Hakone before it expires.

Thank you. I understand that the end of March/April is a very busy season in Japan. It is likely that the trains may be fully booked. As I cannot make reservations now for the trains I would like to take until I arrive in Japan, what can I do now to ensure that I will get the trains I wish to take?

Hi there,

You should not have a problem getting seats if you reserve them 1-2 days advance while in Japan.

This way you will be secure of seating.
