Hi Daniel San,

We are travelling to Japan for Christmas and New Year. We are arriving in Tokyo on December 23rd, then heading to Nikko on Dec 26th until 29th. From there we are going to Kyoto from 29th December to 1st January then Osaka until 2nd Jan and finally back to Tokyo until July 4th.
Would all of those destinations be included with the JR pass? And do you have any ideas about an itinerary which would work for us in terms of which train times are best or routes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated - we are struggling.

Thanks,

Jessica

Hi Jessica,

Yes, all these trips are covered by the JR Pass.

Travel between Tokyo - Kyoto is fairly easy, you can use the Hikari Shinkansen between both stations directly and there's a service every 30 minutes on average. I do recommend reserving seating 2-4 days around the new year period, as a lot of people will be travelling to see their Family for the new year. So I would do so in the first couple of days that you are in Japan.

To travel to Nikko with the JR Pass, take the Shinkansen to Utsunomiya station (from Tokyo or Ueno stations), then the JR Nikko line bound for Nikko. Here too, trains depart at least every 30 minutes during the day.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you for that. That is a huge help.

Could you let us know if we need a 7 day pass or a 14 day pass please? Also could we get on the Bullet Train from Tokyo to Kyoto?

Thank you,

Jessica
