We plan on traveling to Kyoto from Tokyo on 12/30/18, staying one night and heading back the following day. Should I still purchase the Japan Rail Pass or should i just book a reserve seat? I've done some research and I know that New Years week is the busiest travel season in Japan - is this even doable? We really wanted to see Kyoto even for a day. Help Please? and what is the closest station from Shinjuku? Thanks for all your help.

Hi there,
It will indeed be busy, in terms of tickets, I'd prob just buy them for this trip. On a normal day I'd recommend the JR Pass but without it you could also get on the Nozomi, given you a better chance to make the return to Kyoto on a day.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
