Good morning,
I need help with a trip to japan that my family (two teenagers, two adults) will take in a few weeks. We arrive in Tokyo on Saturday at 3 pm, stay in a hotel in Shinjuku (Sunroute Plaza) for four nights; from Tokyo we will travel to Kyoto on Wednesday and plan to return from Kyoto to Narita on Saturday (Flight leaves at 5 pm). This is our first time in Japan, and need help with a couple things:
Transportation from Narita to hotel in Shinjuku – bus? Narita express? Other? I don’t think the JR pass will allow us to do Narita – Tokyo, since the whole trip is 8 days.
Tokyo to Kyoto and return to Narita – JR pass or just get separate tickets? and timing – the plane leaves at 5 pm, we would like to be at airport at least two hours before departure. When should we leave Kyoto to be on time?
Thanks a lot in advance,

Hi there,

I do think it would make sense to use a 7 day JR Pass for travel to Kyoto and back to Narita Airport. This will already give you savings over purchasing normal tickets and any other you do with it will just help save more.

For travel into Shinjuku, the fastest option is to take the Narita Express but this is also one of the more expensive options. There are also express buses from Narita Airport that may cost a little less.

The route from Kyoto to Narita Airport takes about 5 hours of train travel. I would leave at 10 am of before to reach Narita Airport in time and have at least 2 hours for check-in.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hey!

I'm planning a really similar trip.. it would be 1 NEX ticket for day 1 (arrival at Narita-> Tokyo), and the JR Pass for getting around Tokyo as well as for the trip to Kyoto and back (should cover the remaining 7 days). However, I understand that in Kyoto you will need a different ticket as they are not covered by JR. They recommended a sightseeing pass on a different post: https://www.jrpass.com/forum/topics/using-the-japan-rail-pass/posts/jr-pass-valid-for-kyoto-subway

Hope that helps :D
