Hi I'll be arriving in Japan via Narita airport the 5th of February and leaving the 21st of February via Haneda airport.

I'll be spending time in this order Tokyo (7days), Osaka (4 days) and Kyoto ( 6 days).

I guess I'm just asking what would be the best route to purchase concerning the JR passes. I'm sure once in country and after a day or two of travel things will be a little more apparent but I'm currently confused as to what would be the best way to approach travel while in Japan.

Any help with an approach for this would be much appreciated

Hi Josh,

For the 17 days that you are in Japan, the amount of long-distance trips is limited to Tokyo - Kyoto and Osaka - Tokyo. These are the routes that cost the most and where a JR Pass would be useful. However, these are about 10 days apart, so a 7 day JR Pass would not work, while a 14 day JR Pass would need more travel to be cost effecient.

For now I would buy normal tickets while you travel Japan. Add a city or two more and a JR Pass could quickly become useful.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
