Hi,

We are going to Nagoya this March and we will use Takayama-Hokuriku Area Pass. We are just wondering how will we go about switching trains that covers JR and non JR Line.

For example, we will go to Takayama from Chubu. Per Navitime, we will board Meitetsu Tokoname Airport Line from Chubu to Kanayama Station (not covered by JR Pass), then transfer to JR Tokaido Mainline from Kanaya Station to Nagoya Staition (not covered by JR Pass). From Nagoya Station we will boad Hida Line going to Takayama (covered by JR Pass).

Do we need to exit Nagoya Station thru some fare gate first before riding Hida Line to Takayama since the first 2 train rides are not covered by JR Pass or can we just stay at the platform? Per Navitime, we only have 5 min between alighting the train from Kanayama and boarding the train to Takayama.

Thank you for your help.

Hi there,

Each company generally has their own station, or part of the station. This means you have to go through ticket gates to access each area, and will need a corresponding ticket. You will likely buy a normal ticket here.

In case you are at a small station, then you may also be able to pay the fare onboard, or upon arrival. If Navitime says it's the same platform, then this is likely the case.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your reply. Will ask around when we are in Nagoya.
