Should we fly or ride with JR pass

HI all, we are family of 4 arriving in August around 4 pm at NRT , we know we want to go to Osaka for around 4 days and then back to Tokyo and go to Hakone or Mt Fuji hot spring hotel for one night, then spend the rest of 5/6 days in Shinjuku then leave at NRT. (total 11 days)

I found Return flights between NRT and KIX for ¥11,420 per person but we will have to wait for 4 hrs at NRT then arrive KIX at 10 pm by train provided that is no delay which I was told it happens a lot.. (not sure what train yet..)

the other option is to purchase the JR pass (¥30,000) per person, which I need confirmation if it covers all the follow rides,
- NRT to Osaka Namba JR station (which train ?) - Namba JR to Kyoto and back to Namba - Namba JR to Nara and back to Namba - do I use JR within Osaka Namba area ? - Namba JR to Shinjuku JR - Shinjuku JR to Hakone ? and back to Shinjuku ?

if the JR pass covers all these , is it still worth buying and riding JR as listed ? then should I get 7 day or 14 day pass so it also cover NEX from shinjuku to NRT (plus the JR fee within Tokyo) ?

thank you in advance !

Hi there,

Making comparisons between the JR Pass and Airlines is not that easy. While you have a ticket price for the flight, there may be additional charges, as well as transport to and from the airport. The JR Pass is basically one fare and you are done.

Looking at your itinerary, a 7 day JR Pass could be worth it if used for the return Tokyo - Osaka. It will also covers nearly all your rail travel and all together it adds up to nice savings compared to purchasing normal rail tickets.

The JR Station for Namba is called JR-Namba. You can use local trains within Osaka to travel to and from here. To travel from Narita Airport to JR-Namba, take the Narita Express from Narita Airport to Tokyo station, at Tokyo transfer to the Hikari bullet train to Shin-Osaka station, you can use local JR lines from there to JR Namba.

Also of note, the JR Pass can be used to travel to Hakone. You can use the Kodama bullet train to Odawara station. You will still need non-JR transport from there to travel within the Hakone Area.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
