Hi there,
A 7 day JR Pass is the best option here. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen.
Now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price. Which is great for travel on local JR Lines in Tokyo and Kyoto as well as for travel to and from the airport.
