Reserve seating the day before

Hello,

My family of 4 will be arriving in Shibuya, Tokyo on a Tuesday and we plan to catch the train to Kyoto Station on a Sunday. I want to reserve my seats but we are waiting for my cousin to arrive on Friday to reserve all our seats together. Do you think there will be any problems (seat availability) if we book one day in advance for 5 people? I don’t know how late the JR office opens. Are there lots of train availability on a Sunday?

Or is it better to book our 4 seats first and then have him book his seat when he arrives? We have to go that Sunday to Kyoto. I just want to make sure we all get on the same train to Kyoto at least.

You’re input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there,

I don't think it is a problem if you reserve on Fri or Sat. Trains are almost the same on Sunday as any other day of the week on the Shinkansen.

You could even book the 4 seats together, then go into another ticket window and say that you are traveling with your friends and just tell the staff what seat number you want. Usually, this is not a problem. E.g. just say your friends are traveling on seat 7a. 7b. 7c. 7.d and you'd like to reserve seat 7e.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
