we will be traveling 2 weeks with JRpass in July.
for some destinations we want to book the seats on train.
what happens if I reserve a seat and I miss my train ?
Can I take the next train without penalty?

Hi there,
What happens if I miss a train that I reserved with my Japan Rail Pass?
If you missed the train without rebooking your seat, then you are allowed to get on a later train and use a non-reserved seat.
