Hi. We are a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids both over 13). I was considering buying four x 2 week JR passes for our family however thought we may be over spending as we will be well under a14 day stay and we only intend to use the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto and back.
We're planning on flying in to Tokyo and staying for 7 nights, then train to Kyoto and stay 3 or 4 nights before returning to Tokyo and flying back to QLD, Australia.
My question is, would we be better off paying for our train from Narita airport to Tokyo and paying for individual tickets for 3 or 4 days (to travel within Tokyo only) before then purchasing four x 7 day JR passes to see our trip out (3 or 4 more days in Tokyo, bullet train to Kyoto and return to Tokyo). Or just get the 2 week JR pass? Any advice would be welcome and much appreciated!

Hi Tim,

As a general rule, the JR Pass is best used for longer distance / intercity travel. Especially, when using the bullet train network. I think using a 7-day JR Pass would be fine for travel to Kyoto and back. Then use local options to get around Tokyo, and there are plenty of discount passes available!

The same applies to getting to/from the airport.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
