Hi Michael,
The cost of Nagano - Kyoto and Kyoto - Tokyo is below the price of a 7 day JR Pass. So with these two routes in mind, I would advise normal tickets. However the difference is very small, if you where to add any additional travel, then a 7 day JR Pass may quickly become a great option.
