Hi. We are starting our trip with 4 days in Tokyo, inclusive of a day trip to Hakone, and then plan on going to Kanazawa, Kyoto and on to Oita. Is there a good option to use the JRpass to get to Hakone, or would it be better to delay starting the JRPass until we leave Tokyo and use the Hakone Freepass and pay separately for travel within Tokyo until we leave?

Thanks for your help

Hi there,

It would depend on how many days you spend in each city after and for what you would be using the JR Pass instead, when using the Hakone Free Pass.

Basically, I'd try to cover as much longer travel with the JR Pass as possible and use local tickets outside of the usage period.

Have a good trip!
Daniel
