JR pass - is it worth buying one for my trip?

Hi There,

I will be travelling to Japan in September for 8 days and just wondering if JR pass will be beneficial for my trip or would it be better to buy individual rain tickets on the day of travel.

I will be arriving to tokyo and staying in Tokyo for 3 nights. I will then move to a town close to Mount Fuji (not yet decided), any recommendations would be very much appreciated.. I am hoping to stay at Mount Fuji for 2 nights and then to move to Kyoto for the last 3 night of my trip. I will be flying back from Osaka International Airport, so would be hoping to use the train for the airport travel.

Could you please advise whether a JR pass would be beneficial or should I purchase individual rail tickets on the day. I am aware that a JR pass is approximately 250 euro, could you please provide an indication of individual ticket prices in Japan?

Hi Tanya,

No, a JR Pass would not be cost efficient here. This is because you fly back from Osaka. I Japan Rail Pass would have been a great match when used to return to Tokyo.

You can use the JR Pass Fare Calculator to find an approximate ticket cost of a single route or even your full itinerary.

Hi Daniel,

Many thanks for your response, much appreciated as I was not familiar with public transport in Japan at all.

IU have used the calculator to roughly estimate the cost of travel for my trip and it adds to approximately 150.00 Eur, so you are right it would not be worth investing in a JR Pass for this itinerary.
