Hi I am travel with my 2 children- ages 10 and 15 yrs. to Japan. We leave March 22- till April 3.
Our itinerary is fly into NTR, Tokyo 3/23- till 26th. Then bullet train to Kyoto 3/26- 3/30. Then to Naoshima for 3/30-4/1 and one pm 4/1 on Teshima and then 1 pm 4/2 in Osaka. I am trying to determine if I should get a JR pass and for 7 days and wait to activate or for 14 days. Also do you need to reserve seats in advance because of the cherry blossom season? I would love any advice about local subway passes for both Tokyo and Kyoto. Does the JR cover ferries to Naoshima and Teshima.
Many Thanks
Connie
JR pass and local subway passes and ferry tickets

Hi Connie,
What about after Osaka? Will you be flying out of there or return to Tokyo?
Reserving seats is no problem if done 1-2 days in advance. The value of local passes very much depends on what you use them for. In Tokyo a Tokyo Metro Pass is good value if you use it for 4 trips or more on 1 day. In Kyoto, there's a 500yen bus ticket that is good value if you take the bus 3 times or more.
The ferries to Naoshima/Teshima are not covered by the JR Pass.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
