Hello,

Can a JR pass allow us to access the below places that we intend to go:

07/13-07/18: Tokyo: stay at Shinjuku. Go around areas of Tokyo like Shibuya and Shinjuku plus an an all day trip to Hakone
07/18-07/22 Kyoto. Travel from Shinjuku to Kyoto station
07/22-07/26: Osaka: Travel from Kyoto station to Nagahoribashi Station

I understand that there are several other train companies in the Japan, each with its own set of trains that are not covered by the JR pass. Is this correct? I would like to maximize our JR pass and so if I were to buy the 14 day pass, would this pass cover all the cities that I intend to visit above?

Thank you.
Nina

Hi Nina,

The JR Pass covers travel between all the area's you want to visit. For instance in Tokyo, you can go to stations like Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku and many more. Some for going to Hakone (take the Shinkansen to Odawara station) and Kyoto.

Local travel on other companies is however not included, think of local travel within the Hakone region. Additionally, Nagahoribashi is an Osaka Subway station and the Osaka Subway is not covered.

Keep in mind that local travel within cities does not cost a lot relatively, it is the intercity travel that usually breaks the bank and where you can the best value out of your rail pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
