I am coming to Japan on March 25.. landing at Osaka Kansai Airport. I have few questions.

  1. Is it cheaper to buy the JR pass online before coming to Japan or at the counter in Japan ?

  2. I have the following travels planned in Japan. I understand that some trains are not permitted in JR pass, but can I travel the following journeys at no extra cost ?

  3. Kansai Airport to Kyoto Station
  4. Kyoto to Hiroshima and back
  5. Kyoto to Tokyo
  6. Tokyo to Mt Fuji and back
  7. Tokyo to Tokyo Airport
  8. Tokyo to Kusatsu onsen region and back
  9. other local travel in Kyoto and Tokyo by metro, bus

Hi there,

1.) It is up to 20% cheaper to buy the pass online.

2.) Travel between all the cities is included. For Fuji, it depends where around Fuji you visit. Local JR lines in cities like TOkyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima as covered. In addition you can use the sightseeing buses and Ferry to Miyajima in Hiroshima. Other transport like the metro is not included.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your response.

  1. Buying the passes : I am in India right now and I am arriving on March 25, 2018 in Osaka. So how can I buy this online ? I understand that I would receive some courier by Fedex which will contain the paperwork for me to receive the pass at the Kansai airport... What if I do not receive the courier on time ?

  2. I want to do a day trip to Mt Fuji from Tokyo. I do not know the geography of the area. But, what I know is that there is Lake Ashi, Mt Fuji, One cable car ride that takes us to top of a peak and then there is Hakone region as well. Can all this be done in a day trip from Tokyo and what would be an ideal itenary ?

  3. Is there some link / website, wherein I specify my origin station and my destination and the link / website shows me the permissible and the fastest train travel option (covered under the JR pass) to the destination.. ? This would really be helpful.

  4. Are the local metros in Tokyo or Kyoto not covered inside this JR pass ? I understood that it is included.

Regards,
Ashish
