Is JR Pass necessary based on our itinerary?

Hi – we are visiting Japan for the first time in January. We land in Haneda on Jan. 2 and will stay in Tokyo for a few days. We would like to take the bullet train to Osaka on Jan. 6 and stay in Osaka for a few days. And then we would like to take the bullet train to Narita airport from Osaka. Would really appreciate your recommendations on the following:

  1. Does the JR Pass make sense for this?
  2. If so, is the 7-day pass recommended?
  3. There are 8 of us traveling, with 6 big luggages, is there room on the train for our luggages?

Hello there,

1.) The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Osaka using the Shinkansen. Now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price. You can also use the JR pass on local JR lines in Tokyo and Osaka, as well as for any possible day trips. Such as to Kyoto, Nara or elsewhere. Lastly, the JR Pass also covers travel back to Narita Airport.

In regards to luggage. You can store it in the overhead compartments of the train, there is also limit space for suitcases at the end of each train car on the Shinkansen.
