Hello

My wife and I will be travelling to Japan in July 2019. We have used standard JR Pass and Suica on previous visits. This time we're considering Green Class but I need to understand the full benefits. I know Express and Shinkansen have Green Class.

Our itinerary includes:

Narita Express to Tokyo
Tokyo to Nagoya (day trip Shinkansen)
Tokyo to Hakodate (Shinkansen)
Hakodate to Sapporo
Sapporo to Tokyo Shinjuku (local/Shinkansen)
Tokyo to Osaka (day trip Shinkansen)

Question 1: Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Sapporo return. Is this an Express train? Does it have Green Class?
Question 2: What JR Green Class local/Express trains are available in/around Sapporo, Tokyo and Osaka?
Question 3: Does the Shinkansen to Nagoya/Hakodate/Osaka include drinks/snacks?

Thank you!

Hi there,

1.) Yes and yes :)

2.) I don't have a complete list but what you can do is go to Hyperdia, look up the route you want to travel on and then there is a drop down menu on the right that says [Reserved Seat]. You can move this to Green Seat, as long as this option is available, the train has Green Seats.

3.) Last time I took the Hayabusa Shinkansen there was complementary coffee/tea/water on the train to Hakodate. I've gotten report however that this is no longer/not always the case. You do always get an Oshibori and sometimes candy.

In general, the reason to consider Green Class is to travel in more comfort and quiet. There are a lot less passengers in Green Class and those who want to travel often prefer to pay more for the more relaxing experience. Everything else you may get in a nice bonus but this is the real reason.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
