Getting from JR Yamanote to Shinkansen for Kyoto in Tokyo station

I might have limited time in the Tokyo station to get from one train to the next one.

I will get into the station with the JR Yamanote Line (inner loop) which appears to arrive on track 4. I have to catch Shinkansen Hikari 467 for Kyoto which departs from track 16.

Would you know if these two trains are on the same level in the station (no up or down needed)?

About how much time should I reasonably assume to transfer with some luggage from the Yamanote Line to the Shinkansen?

Thanks.

Hi there,

You will have to go to the Shinkansen part of the station and go through the Shinkansen gate. A minimum of 5 minutes is required but likely more if it is your first time.

The best advice I can give you for navigating Tokyo station is, follow the signs. Going to the Shinkansen, you need to go to the Tokaido Shinkansen. Follow these signs and it should not be hard.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
