I will be arriving in japan on march 22nd, and activating my 7 day JR pass on the 24th March, before travelling to Kyoto the next day. If I buy the JR pass online now (November 2022), can I use it to book a seat on the train to Kyoto before I have collected it in person in Tokyo? I am travelling with 2 friends and want to make sure we can sit together on the train, and I'm worried that reserving the seat the day before will leave us with no seats together.

For purchases made through www.jrpass.com, you can start making reservations in Japan, once you have activated the JR Pass. Note that JR trains rarely sell out, and seating can be secured by even booking 10min before departure.
