Hello,

If I am traveling from Tokyo to Nagoya, Nagoya to Kyoto, Kyoto to Osaka, Osaka to Kobe, and then Kobe back to Tokyo, will the JR pass be able to cover all these places?
Are there any shinkansens I can take with these travels using the JR pass? Is there an additional fee for it?

Is there a difference in cabins (eg. green vs economy, etc.) and is it covered by the JR pass?

If the departure time is 11:59PM from Kobe to go back to Tokyo and it is the last 7th day, will I be able to make it back to Tokyo since it will be past that midnight point of the 7th day?

Thank you

Hi there,

Yes, the Japan Rail Pass will be able to cover all these places. Even better, they can all be reached using the Shinkansen.

You can either use an ordinary or green pass, depending on these you get your cabin type.

Note that public transport in Japan shuts down around midnight to resume the following morning. Say the last train arrives in Tokyo at midnight but takes 3 hours to get there for Kobe, that would mean the last train leaves Kobe around 21:00. These are example times, be sure to check actual times on the day that you travel.

Kind regards,
Daniel

On that day I am looking at specifically, the train leaves Kobe at 11:59PM but it is on the last day of our 7 day pass. Will we be able to make it back to Tokyo using the same pass?

Hi,

As stated, the trains stop running around midnight. There are no trains that depart for a 3 hour trip at midnight. You would have to arrive before midnight or so. As a general answer to your question, if you board a train before your pass expires at midnight, you can keep riding it to your destination beyond midnight as long as you don't get off the train. But I have never seen any bullet train operate past midnight - they usually stop around 11:30 PM.

Looking at the current train schedule, the last bullet train leaves Shin-Kobe Station for Tokyo about 7:30 PM. For the difference between Green and Ordinary seats, you can see a picture of both here.

Best of luck.

I am checking the schedule through a website called Hyperdia. It is giving me a schedule that leaves Kobe (Hyogo) at 23:59 with 2 transfers to arrive at Shinjuku (JR). Is the website, Hyperdia, reliable? If not, what website should I use to look for train schedules for future dates?

Hyperdia is reliable but be sure to check the times, this would likely involve an hours-long transfer. The JR Pass will allow you to finish the train ride for free when boarded before midnight but you will have to purchase tickets for any trains boarded after that.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you! Does that mean the 2 transfers I have to make I would have to pay for?
