Hi There.

I arrive 2nd of april in Narita airport 18:45pm
A) I have booked to stay in Niseko for 5 nights from the 3rd to 8th of april *my question is should i buy the 21 days pass or just fly to sapporo? would i be using the jr pass in niseko ( is it even possible)?
flights are costing around AU$300 return for two
Jr pass 21 days around AU$520 each
( do i need to pay extra to travel overnight or is it included in the jr pass)?

Here is my itinerary:

Narita 1 night (2nd of april)
" i can still cancel hotel in case i decide to travel to sapporo overnight)

Niseko 5 nights ( 3rd- 4th -5th-6th-7th of April)

Tokyo 2 nights ( 8th and 9th)
" would i be using jr pass to get to know tokyo"?

Odawara 4 nights ( 10th -11th-12th-13th of april)
" i would like to use jr pass to visit different places"

Nagoya 2 nights (14th and 15th)
"thinking of using jr pass to go to different places"

Kyoto 1 night (16th of pril)
explore the area

Osaka 1 night ( 17th of april)
explore the area

Departure from narita 18th of april
" i read somewhere that it wouldn't count on my consecutive jr pass as return to airport to fly back home is free, is it true?

B) If i buy a 7 days Jr pass when should i activate it ( i would fly back to narita airport from sapporo), should i activate then? Would i be using the jr pass to go around tokyo in the 2 days i am staying there? I thought of activating the jr pass from the 12th when i am in odawara, would i be better off doing that or buying the 21 day pass?

Sorry for all the questions.

Hi there,

I can't make a direct comparison with air travel as there are so many different factors involved. What I can tell you is how the rail journey would work and then I hope you can find what best suits you. Using the JR Pass to Niseko is possible. The JR Pass covers the full route and you can use the Hokkaido Shinkansen up to Hakodate, from where ltd. express runs to Niseko. The full route from Tokyo would take somewhere between 6-7 hours but you'd be in Niseko with only one transfer. Night travel is not possible but starting early would allow you to arrive around lunch time. I do not think you'd use the pass within Niseko but could use it for day trips to say Sapporo or elsewhere in Hokkaido (Nobori Betsu is a great choice is you want to try an Onsen). The JR Pass covers travel to/from the airport but only within its validity period. Normal tickets are required otherwise. What I can also say for sure is that a 21 day JR Pass would provide you with excellent savings compared to purchasing normal rail tickets with your full itinerary. You can also bring snow gear on the train without any additional cost.

Going for a 7 day JR Pass + flights is not a bad idea either but be sure that you would use those 7 days to cover your long distance travels. As these are the most expensive, think of travel to Kyoto and back to Tokyo using the Shinkansen.

I think it will also matter if you prefer air or rail travel. Personally I'm a bit biased in that sense :) So I hope this will help you decide the best option for yourself. If you are still doubting, write our the full place for both options. Like what transport do I need to get to the airport, how long am I waiting, what are the total costs and so on.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
