16 days in japan with 2.5 year old!

I plan to visit Japan while my husband is on a business trip in Yokosuka. I will have my 2.5 year old son with me and my husband will work the whole time but I still want to experience the most of japan on our own!

I plan to buy a 14 day rail pass but will actually be there 16 days.

We arrive at Narita then have to go to Yokosuka immediately. I was thinking of paying for the first trip to Yokosuka then not activating my pass until I have been there for a few days so it will be valid for the duration of my trip. How much does a trip from Narita to Yokosuka cost? Is this the better option over the 21 day pass?

do I need a pass for my 2.5 year old? Website suggests 6 and under is free?

What is the real difference between Green and ordinary class? traveling with a child is green class worth it?
I would like to visit Kyoto, Hiroshima and Mt. Fuji for sure and I have to start in Yokosuka. Do you ahve suggestions on an itenary and perhaps 1-2 more must see places

Hi there,

It depends on the route and trains used but the best route to Yokosuka from Narita Airport is to use the Narita Express to Toyko station and from there to JR Yokosuka line to, well, Yokosuka. This will cost ¥ 4,290 for one way and take 160 minutes.

Children below the age of 6 can travel for free but are not entitled to a seat, this means you would have to take your child on your lap if the train is busy. You can buy a child ticket (half the price of an adult ticket) if you want to be secure of a seat.

The real difference for me between Green and Ordinary is comfort and quiet. There are simply less people traveling green class and those that do pay the extra fee for that experience.

I think using Tokyo (Yokosuka) - Kyoto - Hiroshima as base for your travel is a good idea. This follows the Shinkansen railway line and you can make easy side trips. I think a stop-over at Himeji would be great to see the castle. If you have some spare days, then I would also consider a visit to Kanazawa. This is a very nice city, that is home to Kenryoku-en one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan. You could then use the Hokuriku Shinkansen to return to Yokosuka and swing by Tokyo on the way back.
