Hi,

I am planning for a 15 days trip to tokyo and this is what i initially intended to do ( i hope to get some advice for my itinerary as well as how i can better make use of the different transports in Japan at ease and on a budget:

Arrival from Narita Airport:
1. Take the Keisei Skyliner to Ueno

Day 1-3: Tokyo
1. 72 hours day pass to travel around

Day 4-5: Kyoto
1. Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto using the Platt Kodama Pass(not sure if this is existing now)
2. Purchase the Kyoto city bus and subway 2 days pass (or use suica card + all day bus pass only)
*NOT SURE which is a better option

Day 6-7: probably check Naoshima Island out
*What is the best way to go there and using which passes would allow me to go there?

Day 7: NARA
1. 4days JR Kansai pass or just purchase a train ticket or use the suica pass

Day 7-10: NARA to Osaka
1. 4 days JR Kansai pass or just purchase a train ticket or use the suica pass

Day 11-12: OSAKA-Mt Fuji
1. Does HAkone free pass let me go to mt fuji fm osaka and then to Tokyo the day after?
*Is staying overnight necessary?

Day 13-15: Mt fuji- Tokyo
1. Hakone Free Pass
2. 72 hours day pass/24 hours day pass (as my flight is at 2 pm)

Departure Tokyo to Narita:
1. Keisei Skyliner

FOR THE KANSAI AREA:
*Would it be better to take a train using the kodama pass to go to kyoto and use it again from osaka back to tokyo and use the kansai JR pass(4 days for kyoto>Naoshima>Nara>Osaka) or to purchase the JR rail pass 14 days/7 days?

OVERALL, for my itinerary, i would be moving around within tokyo a lot to touristy areas so would it be wiser to get a 14 days rail pass + suica card for my trip or to purchase 2 sets of 72 hours days pass for Tokyo, one 4 days kansai pass(activate on the last day of kyoto) + Kodama train which cost 10300 yen from tokyo to kyoto and 13300 from osaka back to tokyo, the 2 days amazing osaka pass, kyoto subway + bus pass?

Hope to get a reply asap as i will be leaving soon!

THANK YOU FOR THE HELP!!

Hi Jayne,

I must say that I find it quite hard to match a good travel solution to your itinerary. A 7 day JR Pass would be really good if you could travel Tokyo - Kansai - Hakone with it but you will take a bit more than 7 days for this. At the same time, you don't do enough travel for a 14 day JR Pass to help you make savings.

Using the options you propose may not always work either, the two issues I see are:
1.) The Platt Kodama plan only has a limited amount of seats and if often sold out days (sometimes weeks) in advance. You would only know once you arrive in Japan.

2.) The Hakone Free Pass does not cover travel between Osaka and Hakone, a normal rail ticket a one way Osaka - Hakone is ¥ 12,820 and would have to be paid in addition to the Hakone Free Pass.

If you can, consider arranging plans in such a way that you can travel Tokyo - Kansai - Hakone in 7 days and then buy local passes around that as needed.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
