10 DAYS IN JAPAN: TOKYO-KYOTO-OSAKA

Hello!!!
I am planning on traveling for the first time to Japan for about 10 days in September. I am not sure whether getting a 7 day JR pass is going to be sufficient, therefore I would like to get some suggestions from you.
Below is more or less the itinerary I am thinking of:

I am traveling first from Osaka to Tokyo (I cannot change this step here). Spending 3\4 days around Tokyo including trips to Nikko and Mount Fuji.
Then 2 days in Kyoto followed by trips to Nara, Hiroshima and finally back to Osaka. I will be flying home from Kansai airport.

Any advice about transportation strategies as well as must see places is greatly appreciated :)
Cheers,

Rossana

Hi Rossana,

Yes, a 7 day JR Pass would be a very cost efficient option for your trip. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is similar to the cost of a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. You will do this plus a ton of extra travel, such as to Hiroshia, Osaka, Nikko, Nara and so on. In other words, the JR Pass will be amazing here!

A bit of general advice on Fuji:

Hope this helps,

Hi Daniel-san,
thanks for your answer!!
I have some more questions if you don't mind:
1) When would you recommend I activate the JR pass as the plan is more or less as follows?
Day 1: Osaka to Tokyo
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Tokyo\Nikko
Day 4: Fuji
Day 5: Kyoto
Day 6: Kyoto
Day 7: Nara
Day 8: Hiroshima
Day 9: Osaka
Day 10: Return from Kansai

2) What would it be convenient transportation wise for the 3 extra days not included in the 7 days covered by the JR pass?

3) Do you think what I'm planning to visit is too much to be done in 10 days?

Thank you very much :)

Hi Rossana,

I would activate the JR Pass at Day 1 and then move the day trip to Hiroshima on day 7. This would give you the best possible savings. A return Kansai - Hiroshima will be around 20.000yen while a day visit to Nara will only be around 1.500yen. So use the JR Pass to travel to Hiroshima and just buy a normal ticket to Nara.

You will be quite busy for travel. It depends on whether you want to see the high lights in each area or really get a feel for a place.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
