Hi all,

I will be travelling to Japan from 9th Sept, arriving at Osaka, until 18th Sept, leaving via Tokyo.

My current itinerary is as such:
9th: Reach Kansai International Airport at night, train to accommodation in Osaka, rest
10th: Day trip to Kyoto, return to Osaka at night
11th: Day trip to Kobe, return to Osaka at night
12th: Explore Osaka in the morning, Head towards Takayama around noon, staying at Takayama
13th: Explore Takayama, leave around noon towards Tokyo, staying in Tokyo
14th: Day trip to Nikko, accommodation still in Tokyo
15th-17th: Mostly Tokyo, going to Mt. Takao and also Odaiba
18th: Accommodation -> Narita airport, leave Tokyo

Currently, I am planning to buy the following pass:
1)3day Kansai pass from 9th - 11th, to cover:
- KIX Airport to Osaka - day trip to Kyoto and back - day trip to Kobe, Nara and back - general travel within Osaka

2) 7day JR Pass (the ~30,000JPY one) from 12th-18th to cover:
- Osaka to Takayama, Takayama to Tokyo - Day trip to Nikko and back - Travel within Tokyo - Train ticket to Narita airport

Please advise if the passes I intend to buy are indeed able to cover the trips. Also, will the trips justify the cost of the passes?

This is the first time I am considering JR Pass as previous visit I did not travel to so many places. Thank you so much for the help in advance!

Hi there,

A Kansai Area Pass works well here, as you will be travelling daily and between different cities. I also checked the JR Pass and it also will help you make good savings on this trip, especially with the added trip to Nikko (be sure to use the Shinkansen to get there quick).

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel-san,

Thank you for your quick response!

There has been a slight change in my travel plan (going Hakone instead of Takayama) but I think I'm still getting the passes after all.

Thank you again!

Rinus

Hi Rinus,

I must say that the trip to Takayama covered a significant of your travel costs. It is likely cheaper to buy the tickets now normally, as Hakone is directly on the route between Kansai - Tokyo.

At the very least I would re-calculate the cost of normal tickets vs the cost of a JR Pass.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you again for your reply.

I re-did the calculation and actually you are right. If we are going to Hakone instead of Takayama, we will barely break even. In such case I think not getting the pass might be more worth it for the flexibility of our transport choices.

Rgds,
Rinus
