Travelling to the ski slopes

Hello,

My family of four will soon be taking to the slopes for 6 nights in Hakuba, Negano. We are all super excited, but due to the short trip I want there to be as little fuss as possible, especially considering all the travel to be undertaken.

As we will only be visiting the Negano ski fields this time round, I was wondering whether a JR pass was optimal for our journey and which one to get. In terms of regional passes, which is better suited to our needs, keeping in mind we are limiting ourselves to the east JR region (if I’m correct). In that case, would it be beneficial to purchase JR passes or simply buy as we go.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Warm regards,
Fleur

Hi Fleur,

Most people I speak to that do a Ski trip to Japan spend several days, if not a week, at the Ski resort. A JR Pass usually does not add value, as you need to be travelling to make good use of the pass.

In case you just do a return to Hakuba, then I recommend just using an Express bus from Tokyo. This gets you directly to the resort, and is easier if you carry any gear.

Consider a JR Pass, if you plan to visiting different cities or areas.

Kind regards,
Daniel
