Travel plan for a 18 day holiday in Japan

We are planning a 18 day holiday at the end of May through the first part of June. Our plan are for Haneda Airport - Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka - Kansai Airport. We also plan on taking a day trips to Nara and Kobe. I'm wondering if the JR Rail pass is the best way to go? I'd like to go down to Hiroshima too, my ancestral home, but wondering if that would be too adventurous for a day trip.

We are also traveling with my 2.5 year old son and would like to forward our luggage so we don't have to carry it on the Shinkansen. Are there any recommendations?

Hi there,

Whether a 7 day JR Pass will help you make savings would depend on if you make the trip to Hiroshima or not. A one way Tokyo - Kansai Area (around 15.000yen) would not be enough for a 7 day JR Pass to make savings. However add a return Osaka - Hiroshima (around 20.000yen) and the JR Pass would help you make savings.

For making the day trip, it is viable. A one way from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima takes 1h40m on the Sakura Shinkansen. You will have most of the day to see both Hiroshima and Miyajima is you leave early and take a train back after 6pm.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
