Travel between Kyoto and Lake Fuji / Hakone and Tokyo

Hi everyone, I am looking for advice regarding two aspects of my upcoming trip to Japan in Nov/Dec:

  1. What is the fastest way to travel between Kyoto and Lake Fuji - I understand there should be a train and bus involved - I will have a JR Pass when I am in Japan.

My search on Hyperdia suggested the following:
Take the JR Tokaido Shinkansen from Kyoto Station to Mishima Station then Fujiku bus to Kawaguchiko

  1. I am also looking for the best route to take from Hakone back to Tokyo Station - I am staying at Hakone Kowakien Tenyu and I can't seem to find which is the closest station to then take the JR Tokaido-Shinkansen from Odawara Station to Tokyo Station (again through Hyperdia - therefore not sure if Odawara station is the best option given where I am staying).

Would appreciate any assistance - thanks.

Hi there,

1.) It will depend on what time of day you travel. One option is to use the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Mishima station and use a bus from there to Kawaguchiko. The bus is not covered by the JR Pass, details are here.

The 2nd option is using the JR Pass to travel from Kyoto - Otsuki (with 2-3 transfers on route) and from Otsuki use the Fujikyu rail to Kawaguchiko. Also here the Fujikyu line is not covered and requires an additional 1,140yen fare.

2.) The closest station appears to be Kowakidani Station, you can use the Hakone-Tozan line from there with a transfer at Hakone-Yumoto to get to Odawara.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks so much. This is extremely helpful.

Re. point 1 travelling between Kyoto and Lake Fuji - I would leave Kyoto relatively early in order to maximise the time at Lake Fuji (staying there for one night - will have had 4 nights in Kyoto already). It seems option 1 KYOTO - MISHIMA - KAWAGUCHIKO is faster than option 2?

Thanks again
