Hi, we're trying to navigate the best way to commute between Tokyo > Nagano > Kanazawa > Kyoto > Tokyo over 6 days. I'm assuming the rail pass will be the most cost effect pass for travelling over this week between cities? If the pass is the best solution. How do we go about pre-booking trains for commuting between cities? The booking sites I've found aren't clear, it's difficult to decipher which station connects A to B. Do we need to book all these ahead of time, or should we wait until we're in Japan? Thank you!

Hi there,

Yes, the 7 day JR Pass is by far the best option for this route.

The route you travel is quite straightforward and I do not expect any issues. If you do find it hard to understand the routes, then just let the JR Staff do the work for you. Basically, go to the station, show your JR Pass and tell a JR Staff member when and where you want to travel. They'll find the best route for you and reserve seats at the same time. I recommend doing this 1-2 days in advance for each leg, so you know that time to travel and are secure of seating.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks, Daniel! So if we talk to a JR Staff Member the first day we get into Tokyo they should be able to help us pre-book the rest of our trains for the trip?

Hi again,

Yes, you can do it like that. It can help to bring a printed list if you plan on doing a lot of them.
