Tokyo - Fuji - Kyoto - Osaka - Nara - Koya - Tokyo

Hello everybody! I will be travelling to Japan in december, and will be staying around for about 20 days. I'm looking quite forward to it. I will land in Tokyo, visit the city for a 4 or 5 days, then head to Fuji to spend 1 day there. After that I will be going to Kyoto for 3 days, 2 days in Osaka, to travel to Nara. From there I plan to go to Koya, spending a few days, to travel back to Tokyo.

I already used the calculator on this website, to see that buying a Japan pass for 21 days might not be the most economical option for this travel plan. I have been looking to find if a combination of region passes would work out in a better way, but I got a bit lost there. I am thinking of taking a guess on buying separate tickets at the stations 'on the go', but since my knowledge of Japanese language is close to nothing, this might be tricky too. Could someone give me a hint or direction on where to look or how to plan these travels?

Kind regards,
Rob

Hi Rob,

After having reviewed your travel plan, I must say that it is hard to match a pass to your travels. This is mostly because you spend a long time within the Kansai Area (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Koya-san). Local travel around Kansai is lowcost and a pass does not always work out economically here.

I'd recommend a 7 day JR Pass if you'd make the return Tokyo - Kansai within 7 days but it looks like you take a bit longer. As such, I think the best option would be to get an IC card and then buy the Shinkansen travels to/from Tokyo separately. This way you would not make any savings but it would be the easiest way to travel without a JR Pass.

That said, if you do need an excuse to get a 14 day JR Pass. Add a site trip to Hiroshima & Miyajima. Hiroshima is a city I think everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime and the floating Tori gate at Miyajima is one of the most Iconic places in Japan. There're both amazing places to visit.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
