Hi there, We are a couple from Spain visiting Japan in September. Our itinerary concerning trains will be as follows:

9/1: Day-trip from Tokyo to Nikko.
9/3: Tokyo-Kanazawa with stop-over in Matsumoto.
9/5: Kanazawa-Takayama through Shirakawago.
9/6: Takayama-Gero.
9/7: Gero-Kyoto.
9/9: Day-trip frm Kyoto to Nara.
9/11: Kyoto-Miyajima with stop-over in Himeji.
9/12: Miyajima-Hiroshima.
9/13: Hiroshima-Kinosaki Onsen.
9/14: Kinosaki-Osaka.
9/16: Osaka-Tokyo. 2 noches en Tokyo.

I cannot get all these trips within a 14 day JR Pass. I have to leave the daytrip to Nikko out. The rest fits nicely, but separate tickets cost 77.500 JPY and the JR Pass costs 80.000, so the difference is economically negligible.

Is there a Regional Pass or Pass combination that could improve the cost of this itinerary?

Hi there,

You can combine these regional passes below with individual tickets to get the best value for your journey!

1) Tokyo to Nikko (Sept 1): Use a Nikko Pass (by Tobu Railway) or a JR Tokyo Wide Pass (3 days).
2) The "Alpine" Leg (Sept 3–7): Use the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass (5 days).
Note: This covers Kanazawa, Takayama, Gero, and Kyoto. It also includes the bus to Shirakawago.
3) The "West Japan" Leg (Sept 11–14): Use the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (5 days).
Note: This covers Kyoto to Hiroshima, Miyajima, and even the trip up to Kinosaki Onsen.
4) Osaka to Tokyo (Sept 16): Buy an individual Shinkansen ticket.

I hope this helps!

Kind Regards,

Mariko

Hi there again, I am checking the itinerary you suggest. I understand I need a separate ticket from Tokyo to Kanazawa via Matsumoto. Can I go directly from Gero to Kyoto using the the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass?
