Hi,

We're travelling to Japan as tourists group of 2 with the schedule below. Having this in mind we're having trouble deciding if we need a 2 weeks pass considering we re spending around 3 days in Tokyo, or go for a 7 day pass which we would activate when leaving tokyo, but would imply having to pay for the train from around Hakone back to Tokyo. Please advise and thank you for your tiME

Hi there,

I'm missing some of the dates in your itinerary but a 7 day JR Pass would be the best option if you can complete all of the above and buy normal tickets from Hakone. Going back from Hakone to Tokyo does not have to cost a lot, around 1,500yen when using local trains or double for high speed trains.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
Thank you for the reply. I've tried to make it more clear regarding dates as we re not sure how much we'd be spending exactly in each aside from the already made accommodations from Tokyo and Kyoto

21-24 march(morning) Tokyo
24-26 march Kyoto
27 march Nara
28-29 march Osaka
30 march Himeji castle
31 march Kanazawa
1-2 april Nagano
3 April return to Tokyo

This implies that if we activate the 7 day pass, we would need to pay for Kanazawa to Nagano and Nagano to Tokyo trip.

Hi there,

If it proves hard to make changes, then you can always just buy normal tickets :) As you say, a 7 day JR Pass would not really match your plan right now. So unless things change, I would just stick with normal tickets. As it would not be worth it to get a 7 day pass and then pay for Kanazawa - Nagano - Tokyo out of your pocket.
