One way Tokyo-Osaka and Kansai Area

1.) Yes, there are some services that allow is but we don't sell them directly here at JRPass.com

2.) Yes, the Kansai Area Pass can only be activated within the Kansai Area, so it makes sense to wait until Osaka.

Thanks Daniel-San! That is very helpful indeed. However, there has been an update to my itinerary and will be doing one way trips below;

17th April Tokyo-Osaka
19th April Osaka-Kyoto
20th April Kyoto-Nara, Nara-Osaka
21st April Osaka-Kansai

Is it worth getting a travel pass or will it be cheaper to get one way tickets between these destinations? And are one way tickets easily available at the stations with no bookings?

Also, what is the best way to get around in Osaka, Kyoto and Nara? I learnt there are cards you can top up, or is it easier to get a day travel pass? Example, I’m planning to go to Universal studios in Osaka, and do the sights around there for 2 days. Similarly in Kyoto I plan to go to the Bamboo grove and Inari Fushima Shrine which is far apart.
I saw that Nara park and sights are all within walking distance so I won’t need one for that.
