I had asked a question about the Holiday rapid mtfuji train and you said it was indeed seasonal. We are planning on going to Kawaguchiko on May 31,2019 which falls on Friday. Is this considered the weekend? I am trying to plan hotels etc. Would it be better to just stay in Narita on the night of the 30th( our day of arrival in Japan) and get back to the airport and take the trains listed on Hyperdia from Narita airport to Kawaguchiko which involves using the Fujikyu railway which is not covered under the JR pass? Our rail pass won't start until the 31st so if we went into Tokyo we will have to pay for the trains to get there. I also understand that we can stop at the JR ticket office upon arrival on the 30th and arrange to have the pass start on the 30th.?
Narita airport to Kawaguchiko or Narita to Kawaguchiko
Hi there,
The JR Pass does not fully cover the route to Kawaguchiko, it would not matter what train you travel on. This is because the rails between Otsuki station and Kawaguchiko are owned by Fujikyu railway and they want to charge you for this section.
You can indeed activate the JR Pass on the 30th and start using it at a later date.
Personally, I would travel into Tokyo and try to stay near Shinjuku, this way you can go out and experience the night feel of Shinjuku, have a good meal, then use the train the following morning from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko.
