Hi!

We will be in Japan for 3 weeks in July (8-28th) with our two children. We are arriving and staying in Tokyo for 4 nights and then heading to Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park (staying two nights in Yudanaka). Three questions about this section of our trip, please:
(a) do we express train from Tokyo - Nakano ? (b) How do I access timetable information to know when this service leaves Tokyo? (c) From Nakano would you then recommend going via Kanazawa or Takayama to Kyoto (we will stay one night in each of Kanazawa and Takayama). We will only have one day in each location so we would like to get there quickly and early in the mornings. We can leave later to get to Kyoto as we then have 5 nights there.

After Kyoto, we would like to go to Hiroshima and then we are also considering Nara, and/or Nagoya (Sumo tournament) and/or to Osaka. Our aim is to finally end up in Hakone for a 3-4 night stay before returning to Tokyo for our outward journey. To help plan this section of our journey, could you please advise if there are trains to Hakone from all or any of these places (Hiroshima, Nara, Nagoya, Osaka). Any advice on the order of our travel in this section also appreciated.

This is an amazing service and much appreciated! Look forward to hearing from you. Thank you so much, Annette (NZ)

Hi there,

1.) You can use the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano station.

2.) For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.

3.) Both options will be good. Going via Takayama is more scenic, while I think there's more to see and experience in Kanazawa.

For trains, follow the above advice on how to plan with Hyperdia, this way you can find any route at any time :D Or you can use this website: https://transit.navitime.com/en/jp/

Hope this helps,
Daniel
