We have 2 adults and 3 teenage boys (18,16,13). First trip to Japan for 10 nights. We want to ski but also experience traditional Japan without too much time in transit. Would appreciate your thoughts on my itinerary below-
Arrive 27 March 2016
Night 1 Narita
Night 2-5 Nozawaonsen
Night 6 and 7 Kyoto
Night 8-10 Tokyo.
We would like to get the rail pass but would like to know if this is viable. Is the trip to Kyoto going too far or would it be better to visit somewhere closer to Nozawa before we go to Tokyo.
Regards
Laurie

Hi there,

While Nozawa Onsen - Kyoto is takes a good amount of time to travel. It is a fairly easy route to travel from Nagano - Kyoto. You can even call it pleasant if you enjoy train travel. The route takes you trough the Japanese Alps to Nagoya from where you can use the Shinkansen to Kyoto.

In short, the itinerary looks good with one long route between Nozowa and Kyoto.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel. Would the 7 day pass cover these routes and be the best way to go?

Hi Laurie,

Yes a 7 day JR Pass would be very handy for this route, given that you can return to Tokyo before it expires.

Best wishes,
Daniel

We are now having 3 nights in Kyoto and 2 in Tokyo. The rest of our itinerary is the same.
Does the 7 day pass have to be used on consecutive days?
Would it be better for us to buy individual tickets?
Regards
Laurie

Hi Laurie,

Yes - the JR Pass is valid for 7 consecutive days! If you can't cover the longer routes within this period, then I do think it would be better to just buy normal tickets :)

Best regards!
Daniel
