Hello,

My boyfriend and I will be travelling to Japan in May, luckily we have a whole month to explore. We have a pretty solid itinerary but are a little stuck after choosing to visit Beppu, we can't seem to decide what to do before we need to get back to Tokyo. We like to see cultural sites, enjoy hiking and plan to eat lots of delicious food along the way.

Our proposed plan from Beppu, we have 4 nights to get to Tokyo.....

Beppu --> Kumamoto & Mt Aso (two nights) --> Fuji 5 lakes (three nights) --> Tokyo

We are very keen to get a nice hike in for the last leg of our trip.

Our current itinerary is as below:

TOKYO // 3 DAYS

NAGANO // 2 DAYS

KANAZAWA // 2 DAYS

KYOTO // 5 DAYS
(Potential day trips: Hiroshima, Nara, Kobe)

OSAKA // 2 DAYS

NAOSHIMA // 3 DAYS
(Potential day trips: Teshima, Shodoshima)

BEPPU // 2 DAYS

UNKNOWN // 4 DAYS (help us here :D )

TOKYO // 6 DAYS

DEPARTURE

Any other recommendations also welcome .

Thanks,
Lori and Matt

Hi there,

I love the idea of spending your time in Kyushu before returning to Tokyo. Visiting Kumamoto and Aso is a good way to spend this time. An alternative would be to visit Nagasaki, which is a beautiful and charming city to spend some time. Yet an other alternative is to swing all the way south and make your way down the coast to Kagoshima. This trip is also beautiful and you can visit places like Sakura Jima and Ibutsuki before returning up north, you could also combine this with a good hike in Kirishima park.

Hope you find these suggestions useful,
Daniel
