My son is travelling in Japan and going to use the 14 day JR pass next week. He wants to make a trip from Tokyo to Kyoto and also wants to visit Koyasan and Nikko. . Can he travel from Kyoto to Koyasan with the pass?
And to Nikko.? I tried to look it up at Hyperdia but found it difficult to understand with all the different names of the trains. If the pass is not valid for the whole trip, for which traject does he have to buy an extra ticket and what are the costs? Thank you for any reply

Hi there,
For travel to Koya, please read our detailed guide here:

For Nikko, take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Utsunomiya, then the JR Nikko line to Nikko. This route is the fastest and fully covered by the JR Pass.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
