Dear all,
We are planning following 15 days itinerary: Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka - Kobe - Takayama (incl. Oku Hida) - Tokyo.
Please be so kind and let me know if the JPR can be used for all the travels and if the itinerary for 15 days is realistic.
What is the best route from Takayama to Tokyo airport? Thank you for your support.

Hi there,

The route would be realistic and you'd have enough time to enjoy each place. A JR Pass will cover travel between all these cities, including the Shinkansen trains.

The best way from Takayama to Tokyo, is either by Wide View Express Hida from Takayama to Nagoya and then the Tokaido Shinkansen to Tokyo. Or by ltd. express from Takayama to Toyama and the Hokuriku Shinkansen from there to Tokyo. Both options take about the same amount of time, I think going via Nagoya is more scenic as you go trough the Japanese Alps and can see Fuji on a clear day from the Tokaido.

Thanks a lot for your reply. For the above itinerary do I order the 14 days Nationwide Japan Rail Pass?

In addition please be so kind and let me know if I can use the pass to go from and to the Tokyo airport or otherwise what is the best ticket to buy?

Can the JRP be used within Tokyo, Kyoto etc as well?

Thank you for your support.

For me to find the best pass, can you give me an estimate of how many days you'd like to stay in each place?

The JR Pass covers travel to/from the airport as well as local JR lines in Tokyo and Kyoto. Other transport like the Tokyo Metro is not included.

It will be 5 nights in Tokyo & 6 nights in Kyoto with daytrips to Osaka & Kobe as well as 4 nights in Takayama area.

I calculated the cost of your itinerary but it looks like that it will be slightly cheaper to buy normal tickets this route. The plan sort of falls in between a 7 day pass and 14 day pass.
