Hello!

My wife and 1 adult children are going to Japan from April 29 to May 6, 2017. This is our itinerary:

USA to Narita airport Narita airport to Tokyo - 2 nights at Hotel Mystays Premier Hamamatsucho Tokyo to Hakone - 2 nights at Hotel Harriway Hakone Hakone to Kyoto - 2 night at Reiah Hotel Otsu Ishiyama Kyota to Tokyo - 1 nights at Hotel JAL City Haneda Tokyo Haneda airport to USA

Is it better to get the Japan Rail Pass than to buy separate tickets?
If we have Japan Rail Pass can we use in the city subways and buses in Kyoto, Hakone and Tokyo?

Thank you.

Hi there,

I do recommend using a 7 day JR Pass for travel from Tokyo - Hakone - Kyoto - Tokyo. The cost of a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen is almost the same as the cost of a 7 day JR Pass. Adding a little more travel would easily help you make savings.

Some notes on usage:
1.) You can use the Shinkansen to Hakone with the JR Pass. Take any Kodama service from Tokyo station to Odawara. Odawara is the base station for Hakone, from there non-JR transport is used to explore the area.

2.) The JR Pass is also valid on local JR lines in Tokyo and Kyoto, as well as the Tokyo Monorail to Haneda Airport. The subway, however is not included. Local JR buses are covered (they have a JR sign) but not all buses are operated by JR.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
